I don't want to be alarmist, but this is the highest commodity price I've experienced in 27 years in the coffee roasting business.
The previous high in 2011 topped out at about $3 USD per pound, at a time when the US Dollar and Canadian Dollar traded close to par. Today is a very different story. While the price for Arabica is currently close to $3.30 USD, the Canadian Dollar trades at a significant discount to the American Dollar, and is currently at $0.69 USD. When doing the painful math, Arabica is trading at approximately $4.75 CAD, a 60% increase over the previous high in 2011.
All things considered, we, along with most roasters, will be forced to increase our prices to compensate for this huge spike. Unwanted but completely necessary.
